Rayies Altaf is an STS (science-technology studies) researcher and a freelance science journalist. He holds two degrees. One in the area of Science Communication and other in the area of Science Policy from Jawaharlal Nehru University. His areas of interest include science-society interaction, ecology, climate change and sustainability. He has experience in writing and reporting across a variety of platforms and formats such as short documentary, photo-essays, print and online media.

His writings and columns on science, technology and environment have featured in both regional and national print media like The Hindu, The Hindu Business Line, Deccan Herald, Down-to-earth, Science Reporter, The Wire, Scroll, Greater Kashmir and Rising Kashmir. He has also covered Indian scientific research for Indian Science Wire in the past. He has previously worked with the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi, and Ambedkar University, New Delhi. Rayies is the recipient of two foreign fellowships in the area of sustainability and science communication. He was one among the five non-European candidates selected for another prestigious fellowship, Erice School of Science Journalism & Communication 2020, which subsequently got postponed due to Covid-19 pandemic. In 2020, he was also awarded TERI Media Fellowship on Climate Change Communication in the Himalayas. He has also taught at Delhi School of Journalism, University of Delhi.
