Project details

Journalists have been breaking news and covering stories using their phones for years, and events like the lockdowns have increased the need for mobile journalism skills. So, we’re calling journalists from across India to apply for a fellowship to cover stories that they are passionate about, using their mobile phones. We will provide everything from skill development, production support, equipment, and the opportunity to apply for grants to produce and publish these stories.

By the end of this program, fellows were supported with grants to cover stories ranging from education to press freedom. Fellows also participated in sessions that covered digital security and fact-checking.

Three MoJo fellows were selected to participate in YouTube's Creator Program for Independent Journalists, out of 49 journalists globally.

As the UP Panchayat Gram Pradhan Elections's reservation list for 2021 is challenged in the Supreme Court, (https://www.amarujala.com/india-news/...) journalist Medhavini Mohan speaks to the previous pradhans in Bundelkhad region to gauge the prevalence of the 'Pradhan Pati'. A pradhan pati is a label for husbands of women elected as pradhan. Often. they also oversee the administrative decisions and may be considered the actual pradhan by their voters. Sometimes it's also the sons who do the work of pradhan instead of their mother, as Medhavini confirms through her reporting.

India's Forest Man's next project is 4 times of Molai forest near Jorhat Assam

Jadav Payeng, known as the Forest Man of India is working on his second forest after creating the Molai forest in Majuli (near Jorhat Assam). After a flood in 1979, Jadav noticed snakes had died in large number as the area (which is now a forest) used to be just sand. Once he got some advice from his aunt and uncle, he planted some bamboo where the snakes had died. He hoped that the bamboo would grow and provide shade for the snakes to hide from the sun. But 30 years later, Jadav has created a forest that not only provides shade for snakes but also for rhinos, elephants, monkeys, tigers and many birds. And now, he's taken on a project to plant a forest 4 times the size of Molai (about 500 hectares).

Survivors of Bihar's massacres continue to struggle decades later

In Old News Fellow Seetu Tiwari explores the long history of massacres in Bihar which gave rise to the 'Ranvir Sena', a militia group. Throughout the massacres, women were rampantly targeted. Seetu talks to the women who lived through this violence and documents how it continues to impact their daily life.
